Las Vegas Landscaping for Beginners

When it comes to desert landscaping and more specifically Las Vegas landscaping there is one word that comes to mind…conservation. Water is the most precious resource in a desert climate; especially one such as Nevada where Lake Mead is continuously in the news for the speed with which it is evaporating. As such many people miss out on the beauty of landscaping their properties for fear of wasting this oh so precious resource. The good news is that you can a beautiful landscaped property and even plenty of color while minimizing your use of water and even conserving this valuable commodity. I know it sounds amazing and you may even be saying to yourself that it sounds too good to be true but with proper planning this is very possible even for the novice gardener and landscaper.

The first, and perhaps most important factor when it comes to landscaping in desert regions is to choose plants that are native to the area in which you are landscaping. This of course is my first no nonsense step to establishing a nice lush surrounding even in harsh climates. By using these types of plants you achieve two major benefits. First, not only are they are already accustomed to the dryness and heat of the Las Vegas desert but they have also already adapted to the tremendous amount of sunlight they will be receiving almost every single day of the year. Plants from other climates will typically be accustomed to their particular region and may not fare as well here in Nevada.

Second they will more than likely not need some of the more expensive fertilizers and nutrients in order for them to obtain their maximum growth potential and beauty. They are made to grow in desert soil which is not well known for being nutrient rich. Combine these two important assets with the fact that these plants have evolved over time to know how to survive with minimal amounts of water and they are excellent landscaping choices for desert areas.

Doing your homework prior to deciding on what type of desert garden landscaping you want to install is very important. It is quite possible to have a lush green or even brightly colored garden landscape. The best thing for a novice to do prior to starting any landscaping project would be to consult with a local expert for the best possible shaping of your landscaping project. This expert could even offer up ideas with regards to how you might best be able to bring color and greenery into your landscaping while still providing the most efficient possible use of water, which is very limited in supply.

One of the biggest challenges you will face when landscaping in Las Vegas is water use efficiency. It is very important that you use your irrigation systems intelligently so as not to waste any unnecessary of water as a result of inefficient delivery. One of the ways you might go about addressing this is by arranging plants that need similar amounts of water near each other. You could also make clever use of either real or engineered slopes in order to provide a runoff area for those plants that need the highest concentration of water. It is very important that you choose trees, bushes, shrubs, plants, and flowers that are hardy and resilient and, if not native to the area, at the very least native to a similar climate. The desert can be very rough on plants and people alike so make sure that you keep this fact in mind when landscaping your property and you should be able to come up with a beautiful oasis to call your very own.
